01 · Surah Al-Kahf

The Cave (18:9–26)

The Qur’an recounts the story of the Aṣḥāb al-Kahf (Companions of the Cave) in the 18th surah, named after the narrative itself. The passage begins by asking whether the Companions of the Cave and of the Inscription are among God’s wondrous signs, then narrates their withdrawal from a persecuting people, their sleep in the cave, and their eventual awakening.

Unlike the detailed Christian hagiographies, the Quranic account is concise, allusive, and theologically focused. It assumes the audience already knows the basic story and concentrates on the lessons to be drawn from it.

How the Quranic version differs

Number left open: The text mentions the possibility of three, five, or seven companions (plus their dog) and states that only God knows their exact number (18:22).
Duration: Explicitly given as 309 years (18:25).
The dog: A dog is associated with the companions and is mentioned as stretching its paws at the entrance.
No emperor names: Decius and Theodosius are not named; the focus remains on God’s power rather than imperial chronology.
Theological emphasis: The story illustrates God’s mastery over time, the temporary nature of worldly power, and the reality of the resurrection.

03 · Relationship to the Christian Legend

Shared story, distinct presentation

Most modern scholars regard the Quranic account as drawing on the already circulating Christian (especially Syriac) legend of the Sleepers of Ephesus. The story was known in the Christian communities of Arabia and the surrounding regions in the early 7th century. The Qur’an does not simply copy a Christian text; it re-frames the narrative within its own theological vision and deliberately withholds certain details that the Christian versions emphasize.

Common Core

Young believers flee persecution, take refuge in a cave, fall into a miraculous long sleep, and awaken in a transformed world. Both traditions treat the event as a sign of God’s power over death and time.

Two faiths, one mystery

The official website of 7 Sleepers – The Movie explicitly notes that the story belongs to two traditions at once: it appears in the Qur’an and has been kept alive in the Christian world for more than a millennium and a half. The film approaches the shared narrative with respect for both communities of faith.
