01 · Timeline
Key historical moments
249–251 CE
Reign of Emperor Decius. Empire-wide edict requiring sacrifice to the Roman gods. Systematic persecution of Christians. Traditional setting of the Sleepers’ flight and sealing of the cave.
408–450 CE
Reign of Theodosius II. Traditional period of the Sleepers’ awakening. Intense theological debate about the resurrection of the body.
Mid-5th century
Earliest literary versions of the legend appear (Greek and Syriac). The story is already being used to affirm bodily resurrection.
Early 6th century
Jacob of Serugh composes a Syriac memrā on the Sleepers. Pilgrim lists (e.g., Theodosius the Archdeacon) mention a church of the Sleepers at Ephesus.
Late 6th century
Gregory of Tours records a Latin version, transmitting the story to the medieval West.
Early 7th century
The story enters the Qur’an in Surah Al-Kahf (18:9–26) as the Companions of the Cave.
1926–1928
Austrian excavations at the Ephesus grotto uncover the basilica, graves, and inscriptions linked to the cult of the Seven Sleepers.
02 · Historical Context
Why the legend flourished
The Decian persecution supplied a realistic historical backdrop. The 5th-century debates about the resurrection supplied a pressing theological need. The existence of an early Christian cemetery complex at Ephesus supplied a physical place that could be identified with the story. These three elements together allowed the legend to take root and spread rapidly across the Christian East and West, and later into Islam.
03 · The Cult
From local memory to international pilgrimage
By the 6th century the Ephesus site was already a recognized pilgrimage destination. The cult continued through the Byzantine period. Inscriptions and graffiti left by later medieval pilgrims show that devotion to the Sleepers remained alive for centuries. Parallel shrines appeared in other regions as the story traveled.
